Tom Oppenheim

A nine-year-old Tom was watching cartoons on the evening of April 4, 1968 when Superman was interrupted by the breaking news of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. This event marked Tom's awakening to justice and injustice, led by a love for the voice and teachings of Dr. King. Tom's first action was a collection of donations for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference nearly forty years before he created the Stella Adler Outreach Division, now Arts Justice, in 2004

Carlos Caldart

Carlos was the first director of outreach, joining the team on a part-time basis in 2004. Over the course of eight years he created a full-time position and was responsible for building Adler Youth, Summer Shakespeare and a wide-reaching program for public schools that reached more than 5,000 kids. Carlos left to pursue a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to live in Africa and currently leads a DOE special needs classroom. Carlos is pictured here at left along with Artistic Director Tom Oppenheim and Tommy Demenkoff who succeeded him in the role.

There, he discovered his interest in Shakespeare in a production of Julius Caesar. “The fault, dear Brutus is not in our stars but in ourselves that we are underlings”. He draws back to this motivation despite the circumstance. Lorenzo is a 2019 graduate of the Juilliard Drama Group 48 and has since made his Off-Broadway debut in The Acting Company’s Native Son and Measure for Measure and Broadway debut in A Soldier’s Play.

_________

I am eternally grateful for my Adler Youth experience. I felt artistically seen, valued and understood for the first time in my life. I discovered my passion for the Theatre and it has led me on an endless path of self-discovery. I am grateful to my Adler family for all of their continued generosity, love and support throughout the years.

_________

When going through Stella Adler’s Arts Justice program, I heard a profound teaching of Stella Adler herself: ‘Growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous.’ Through the years I’ve found this not only to be true, but it’s become my way of life.
— William Gallagher

Stella Adler was an escape and a mental connection to the outside world. If it wasn’t for them, I probably would have been a problematic inmate. You guys are great and wonderful, and I feel blessed to be a part of such a wonderful family.

2019

Alex Anderson

"As a formerly incarcerated person, I have committed my life to helping individuals’ transition from prison back to society. I joined Ritual4Return as a participant in 2009. At the time, I was seeking healing from the trauma I experienced due to my incarceration, which often triggered emotional distress in my life, despite my being out of prison for almost a decade. During the process of creating a rite of passage, I was able to heal from the trauma I experienced and step fully into being a positive and productive person. In 2018, I returned to Ritual4Return as the social worker and later director of programs. I believe it is important for me to share this space with others to receive the healing and restoration that I experienced.”
